DELAND, Fla. – Tyler Von Grote threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns and Cam Stephenson rushed for 113 yards and two scores as Stetson picked up its first victory of the season with a 45-10 win against Webber International on Saturday at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium.
Stetson established control early, scoring twice in the opening quarter before adding 10 points in the second to take a 24-0 advantage into halftime. The Hatters stretched their lead to 31-0 in the third quarter before Webber International broke through in the fourth.
Von Grote completed 19 of 24 passes and averaged more than 13 yards per attempt. Stephenson provided an explosive complement on the ground, gaining 113 yards on three carries with two touchdowns. Will Rogers led the receiving corps with five catches for 123 yards and a touchdown.
Montana def. Drake, 45-10
MISSOULA, Mont. – Drake struck first but could not keep pace with Montana as the Bulldogs fell 45-10 Saturday at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.
Drake opened the scoring with a first-quarter field goal before Montana answered with 21 consecutive points to take a 21-3 advantage into halftime. The Grizzlies added two touchdowns in the third quarter before the Bulldogs found the end zone in the fourth.
Riley Warzynski completed 31 of 60 passes for 252 yards and a touchdown without an interception for Drake. The Bulldogs again relied heavily on their passing attack after Warzynski threw for 535 yards in their season opener against South Dakota Mines.
Montana countered with a balanced attack as Keali’i Ah Yat completed 27 of 40 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns. Eli Gillman rushed for 105 yards and three touchdowns and added a receiving score.
North Dakota def. St. Thomas, 62-26
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – St. Thomas scored 26 points against North Dakota but could not overcome a fast start by the Fighting Hawks in a 62-26 setback Saturday at the Alerus Center.
North Dakota scored 20 points in the opening quarter and built a 41-12 halftime advantage. St. Thomas kept competing after the break, scoring a touchdown in each of the final two quarters. Nick Peipert connected with Patrick Wagner for a 27-yard touchdown in the third, and Noah Long scored on a 1-yard run early in the fourth.
Anthony Policare completed 12 of 24 passes for 128 yards for the Tommies, while Peipert added 111 passing yards and a touchdown. Stefano Giovannelli led St. Thomas with 75 receiving yards. The Tommies finished with 293 yards of offense.
North Dakota quarterback Jerry Kaminski threw five touchdown passes, while Charles Langama rushed for 120 yards and a score.
Elon def. Davidson, 38-0
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson was unable to overcome Elon’s 21-point second quarter as the Wildcats fell 38-0 Saturday at Richardson Stadium.
Davidson’s defense kept the Wildcats within one possession through the opening quarter, with Elon holding a 3-0 lead after 15 minutes. The Phoenix broke the game open with three touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 24-0 advantage into halftime and added one touchdown in each of the final two periods.
Casey Bullock completed 13 of 32 passes for 174 yards for Davidson, while Jim Franklin added 28 passing yards. Jacary Lightsey provided the Wildcats’ biggest production through the air, catching three passes for 72 yards.
Davidson finished with 251 yards of total offense but was limited to 49 rushing yards on 23 attempts. The Wildcats’ defense held Elon to a field goal in the opening quarter before the Phoenix found the end zone in each of the final three periods.
Mercer def. Presbyterian, 62-3
MACON, Ga. – Presbyterian moved the ball for a second-quarter scoring drive but could not slow Mercer’s offense as the Blue Hose fell 62-3 Saturday in a game called with two minutes remaining because of lightning.
Presbyterian put together a nine-play, 54-yard drive late in the first half, with Kade Bailey converting a 38-yard field goal with 43 seconds remaining. Mercer answered just before halftime to take a 41-3 advantage into the locker room.
Landon Sharpe threw for 184 yards for the Blue Hose, who were unable to duplicate the offensive production from their 47-37 season-opening victory against UVA Wise. Presbyterian continued to battle after halftime before weather brought the game to an early conclusion.
Mercer quarterback Jaylen King accounted for six touchdowns, completing 12 of 15 passes for 236 yards and four scores while rushing for two more. Devon Caldwell added 152 rushing yards for the Bears.
Montana State def. Butler, 51-24
BOZEMAN, Mont. – Butler scored three second-half touchdowns but could not overcome Montana State’s first-half surge as the Bulldogs fell 51-24 Saturday at Bobcat Stadium.
Butler remained within 10-3 after the opening quarter before Montana State used a 20-point second quarter to build a 30-3 halftime advantage. The Bulldogs responded after the break, putting together a 12-play, 65-yard touchdown drive capped by Gabe Passini’s 3-yard pass to Nick Munson.
Butler quickly struck again when Desmin Jackson scored on a 1-yard run, pulling the Bulldogs within 37-17 late in the third quarter. Jarrin Alley added a 1-yard touchdown run with 37 seconds remaining.
Passini completed 14 of 19 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown, while Alley added 50 passing yards. Chet Yardley led Butler with 55 receiving yards, and Munson caught three passes for 32 yards and a score.
UC Davis def. San Diego, 49-17
SAN DIEGO – San Diego scored first and put together two second-half scoring drives before falling 49-17 to UC Davis on Saturday at Torero Stadium in the Toreros’ season opener.
San Diego put together an 11-play, 68-yard drive on its opening touchdown possession, with Omar Mbakwe scoring on a 2-yard run to give the Toreros a 7-0 lead with 3:24 remaining in the first quarter. UC Davis responded with four touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 28-7 advantage into halftime.
The Toreros answered again in the third quarter when Dom Nankil connected with Cole Monach for a 22-yard touchdown to cap a five-play, 75-yard drive. Emiliano Salazar added a 34-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to complete San Diego’s scoring.
Nankil completed 16 of 31 passes for 177 yards and a touchdown. Adam Criter rushed for 54 yards, while Monach caught six passes for 72 yards and a touchdown. UC Davis quarterback Treynor Cleeland threw for 287 yards and five touchdowns, while Matteo Perez rushed for 123 yards.
