Dayton earned a road victory at Eastern Kentucky, while Davidson won an overtime thriller against VMI, St. Thomas held off Southern Utah, Butler topped Chicago State, and San Diego won on a field goal in the final seconds at Cal Poly to highlight Saturday's Pioneer Football League action.

Butler def. Chicago State, 47-20
INDIANAPOLIS – Gabe Passini accounted for four touchdowns and Butler scored 23 first-quarter points, defeating Chicago State 47-20 Saturday at the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl.
Passini opened the scoring with a 9-yard touchdown run before a Chicago State fumble through the end zone gave Butler a safety and a 9-0 lead. Passini then found Nick Munson for a 32-yard touchdown and, after Chicago State answered, connected with Drew Sullivan for a 16-yard score to make it 23-6. Sam Manna's 1-yard run sent Butler into halftime ahead 30-14.
Chicago State pulled within 33-20 early in the fourth, but Butler answered with Passini's 14-yard touchdown pass to Michael Nix. Desmin Jackson put the game away 96 seconds later with a 72-yard touchdown run.
Passini threw for 109 yards and three touchdowns, while Jackson rushed for 164 yards and a score on 15 carries.
Valparaiso falls at Indiana State, 39-16
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Valparaiso scored touchdowns on two second-half drives but could not overcome Indiana State's first-half surge in a 39-16 setback Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
Luke Scoma's 30-yard field goal tied the game at 3-3 midway through the opening quarter. Indiana State took the lead on a safety and added 17 second-quarter points, including Aaron Ball's 59-yard touchdown run, to build a 22-3 halftime advantage. Ball opened the second half with a 58-yard touchdown run to extend the margin to 29-3.
The Beacons answered with a nine-play, 68-yard drive capped by Rowan Keefe's 11-yard touchdown pass to Chris Gundy. Valparaiso added its second touchdown with 5:17 remaining when Noah Ehrlich found Daniel White for a 34-yard score.
Keefe completed 21 of 30 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown. Indiana State's Ball rushed for 182 yards and two scores as the Sycamores used 313 rushing yards to control the game.
Davidson def. VMI, 27-24 (OT)
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Christos Tzoumakas kicked a 25-yard field goal in overtime, and Davidson's defense followed with a game-ending takeaway as the Wildcats rallied to defeat VMI 27-24 Saturday at Davidson College Stadium.
Davidson trailed 14-3 after the opening quarter before Casey Bullock engineered the comeback. Bullock threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Alani Ajigbotosho and a 22-yard score to Jacary Lightsey in the second quarter, helping the Wildcats reach halftime tied at 17.
After a scoreless third quarter, Bullock finished an 87-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run with 59 seconds remaining. VMI answered just 21 seconds later with a 75-yard touchdown pass to force overtime at 24-24.
Tzoumakas put Davidson ahead with his field goal on the opening overtime possession before Hayden Bender forced a fumble recovered by Hayden Meese to secure the victory. Bullock completed 20 of 32 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 104 yards and a score. Lightsey had five catches for 102 yards and a touchdown.
St. Thomas def. Southern Utah, 28-26
SAINT PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas built an 11-point second-half advantage and stopped a potential game-tying two-point conversion in the closing seconds to defeat Southern Utah 28-26 Saturday at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
Nick Peipert opened the scoring with a 63-yard touchdown pass to Quentin Cobb-Butler, but Southern Utah responded with 10 straight points. Joseph Koch's 1-yard run returned the lead to St. Thomas before Southern Utah took back the lead, 17-14. Peipert answered with an 11-play, 77-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run as time expired in the first half, giving the Tommies a 21-17 halftime lead.
Gabriel Abel broke free for a 78-yard touchdown early in the third quarter, extending the Tommies' lead to 28-17. Southern Utah cut the margin to eight with a field goal and scored on an 18-yard touchdown pass with 24 seconds remaining, but the ensuing two-point pass failed.
Peipert threw for 231 yards and a touchdown, Abel rushed for 120 yards, and Cobb-Butler had 108 receiving yards.
Presbyterian falls at Western Carolina, 58-14
CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Presbyterian produced a pair of second-quarter touchdown drives but could not slow Western Carolina's offense in a 58-14 setback Saturday at E.J. Whitmire Stadium.
Western Carolina built a 17-0 advantage before Landon Sharpe connected with Caleb Johnson for a 5-yard touchdown with 4:28 remaining in the first half. After the Catamounts answered with a 62-yard touchdown run, Presbyterian drove 75 yards in seven plays, and Damion Moate scored from 6 yards to make it 24-14.
Western Carolina added a field goal as time expired in the half, then scored 31 unanswered points after intermission. Josh Perry's second rushing touchdown opened the second-half scoring before the Catamounts added three more touchdowns.
Sharpe completed 19 of 27 passes for 162 yards to lead Presbyterian.
Dayton def. Eastern Kentucky, 17-14
RICHMOND, Ky. – Dayton built a 14-point lead and held off Eastern Kentucky's fourth-quarter rally to earn a 17-14 road victory Saturday at Roy Kidd Stadium.
Neither team scored until the final second of the first half, when Bryce Schondelmyer found Michael Mussari for a 4-yard touchdown to complete a seven-play, 70-yard drive. Luke Hansen's 1-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter extended the Flyers' advantage to 14-0.
Eastern Kentucky found the end zone on the first play of the fourth quarter, but Dayton responded with a 69-yard drive that ended with David Maurer's 23-yard field goal for a 17-7 lead. The Colonels cut the deficit to three on Jordyn Potts' 54-yard touchdown pass to Caeleb Schlachter with 8:18 remaining, but the Flyers protected the lead the rest of the way.
Hansen rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries, while Schondelmyer threw for 146 yards and a score. Dayton's defense recorded two sacks and receovered two fumbles, including Jace Schaefer's recovery with 3:33 left in the game to thwart an Eastern Kentucky drive.
Morehead State falls at Western Illinois, 59-2
MACOMB, Ill. – Morehead State's defense produced a third-quarter safety, but Western Illinois built a 31-point halftime advantage on its way to a 59-2 victory Saturday at Hanson Field.
Western Illinois scored twice in the opening quarter and added 17 points in the second to take a 31-0 lead into halftime. The Eagles got on the scoreboard with 6:50 remaining in the third quarter when Luciano Corpora-Ellis tackled the Leathernecks punt returner after he retreated into the end zone for a safety.
The Leathernecks answered with a touchdown later in the third and added two fourth-quarter scores. Morehead State's offense was limited to 77 total yards and 10 first downs.
Isaiah Watts led the Eagles with eight tackles, while J. Bowling recorded a sack. Western Illinois quarterback Kennedy McGill completed 25 of 31 passes for 264 yards and four touchdowns and added 81 rushing yards and a score.
San Diego def. Cal Poly, 38-35
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Emiliano Salazar kicked a 38-yard field goal with two seconds remaining as San Diego answered a Cal Poly comeback and earned a 38-35 road victory Saturday at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium.
Dom Nankil opened the scoring with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Cole Monach before Adam Criter broke a 55-yard touchdown run for a 14-7 San Diego lead after one quarter. After Cal Poly tied the game, Nankil found Monach again for a 22-yard score. Nankil's 1-yard run with six seconds left in the half sent the Toreros into halftime ahead 28-21.
Omar Mbakwe's 1-yard touchdown capped the second half's opening drive and extended the lead to 35-21, but Cal Poly scored the game's next 14 points and tied the game with 8:23 remaining. After the teams traded possessions, Nankil led San Diego on an 8-play, 57-yard drive that included a 28-yard completion to Christopher Hall with 11 seconds remaining. After a run to set up the field goal attempt, Salazar split the uprights giving San Diego the win.
Nankil completed 25 of 30 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns, while Criter rushed for 179 yards and a score on 28 carries. Monach caught seven passes for 76 yards and both of Nankil's touchdown passes.
Stetson falls at UC Davis, 45-7
DAVIS, Calif. – Stetson put together a fourth-quarter touchdown drive but could not overcome UC Davis' fast start in a 45-7 setback Saturday at UC Davis Health Stadium.
UC Davis scored twice in the opening quarter and stretched its advantage to 28-0 by halftime. The Aggies' first-half scoring included touchdown passes of 46 and 19 yards by Treynor Cleeland and a 79-yard punt return for a touchdown.
UC Davis added a field goal and another punt-return touchdown in the third quarter before Stetson broke through with 6:59 remaining. Tyler Von Grote completed a seven-play, 64-yard drive with a 39-yard touchdown pass to Aidan Benzija, cutting the margin to 38-7.
Von Grote completed 22 of 39 passes for 219 yards and a touchdown and also led Stetson with 42 rushing yards. Benzija caught six passes for 70 yards and the Hatters' touchdown, while Stetson finished with 299 yards of offense.
