ST. LOUIS – Stetson ended its 13-game Pioneer Football League losing streak with a home victory against Davidson to highlight Week 6 PFL action. Marist and Drake also picked up home wins during the week. Butler and Dayton were both victorious on the road as each improved to 2-0 in league play.

PFL Week 6 Quick Hits

  • Butler and Dayton used late scores as both improved to 2-0 in PFL play. Butler needed a Reagan Andrew overtime touchdown to secure a win at St. Thomas. Dayton used Mason Hackett’s touchdown with 1:46 to pick up a win at Morehead State.
  • Stetson ended a 13-game PFL losing streak and a six-game losing streak to Davidson with its win today. The Hatters' last PFL victory was a 28-24 win against Presbyterian on Oct. 7, 2023. It was the first time they defeated the Wildcats since Oct. 20, 2018.
  • Marist defeated San Diego for only the second time in the series between the two teams, but for the second time in the last three seasons.
  • Drake opened its PFL play with a shutout win against Valparaiso.

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Sonny Mannino passed for two touchdowns and ran for another late in the fourth quarter, lifting Marist to a 19-14 victory against San Diego on Saturday at Tenney Stadium. After both teams scored in the first quarter, their defenses took control, with the game going 30 minutes without a score. Marist broke the drought with Mannino’s 35-yard touchdown pass to Lance Martinez for a 12-7 lead with 31 seconds left in the third quarter. Mannino extended the Red Foxes’ lead to 19-7 with a one-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. San Diego scored with 2:37 left to narrow the deficit to 19-14, but on the final Toreros drive, Marist recorded three consecutive sacks to end the threat. Mannino completed 22-of-41 passes for two touchdowns while Martinez caught three passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns. San Diego quarterback Dom Nankil completed 12-of-25 passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns.

Dayton 35, Morehead State 28
MOREHEAD, Ky. – Mason Hackett’s three-yard touchdown run with 1:46 remaining helped Dayton escape with a 35-28 victory against Morehead State on Saturday at Jayne Stadium. Dayton built a 28-0 halftime lead thanks to two Luke Hansen touchdown runs and passing touchdowns by Gavin Lochow and Bryce Schondelmyer. However, Morehead State roared back with a 28-point third quarter to tie the game. Bryce Patterson threw two touchdowns, and Isaac Stopke ran for another before S. Webb returned a fumble 35 yards for a game-tying touchdown. But Dayton blocked a field goal late in the fourth quarter and turned that into a touchdown with a seven-play, 76-yard drive capped by Hackett’s touchdown. Schondelmyer completed 18-of-26 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown while Hackett ran for 92 yards and the game-winning TD on 22 carries. Patterson led Morehead State with a 15-of-27 passing effort for 252 yards and two touchdowns.

Stetson 35, Davidson 32
DeLAND, Fla. – Stetson ended a 13-game PFL losing streak with a pair of fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns to eke out a 35-32 PFL victory against Davidson on Saturday at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium. In a game that featured seven lead changes, both the Wildcats and Hatters scored twice in a frenzied fourth quarter. Davidson took a 24-21 lead with 9:09 left as Coulter Cleland found Ivan Hoyt for a 59-yard touchdown pass. Stetson responded immediately with an eight-play, 92-yard drive on the game’s next possession with Mike Dempsey capping the effort with a 15-yard touchdown run for a 28-24 lead. After the Hatters' defense held the Wildcats to four plays and a turnover on downs on the ensuing drive, they needed only three plays and a Trey Clark one-yard touchdown run to extend their lead to 35-24. Davidson would score on their final possession, but could not recover the onside kick. Stetson ran for 384 yards as a team, with quarterback Chris Stephenson recording 135 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries, and Cayden Betts adding 124 yards on 15 carries. Hoyt finished with three touchdowns and 155 yards on eight receptions.

Drake 41, Valparaiso 0
DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake’s defense allowed just 105 yards and picked off three passes to claim a 41-0 victory against Valparaiso in the PFL opener for both teams on Saturday at Drake Stadium. The Bulldogs’ defense recorded 13 tackles for loss, seven sacks, and highlighted their effort with Jacob Auen’s nine-yard interception return for a touchdown for a 20-0 lead in the third quarter. Offensively, Nick Herman paced the Bulldogs with two touchdowns and 53 yards on seven carries.

Butler 21, St. Thomas 14 in overtime
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Reagan Andrew ran for three touchdowns, as Butler upended St. Thomas, 21-14, in overtime on Saturday at O’Shaughnessy Stadium. Andrew ran for touchdowns in the first and second quarters to help Butler build a 14-7 lead with 2:20 left in the first half. St. Thomas scored the game’s first points with 8:26 left in the first quarter, but did not score again until tying the game on Andy Peter’s one-yard run with 10:10 left in the fourth quarter. In the extra period, Andrew ran the ball on all six Butler plays and scored on a one-yard run. The Butler defense made that stand up, forcing a turnover on downs after St. Thomas started a new set of downs on the three-yard line. Andrew ran for 68 yards on 26 carries and completed 16-of-21 passes for 141 yards. Peters completed 16-of-27 passes for 193 yards.
