Regular-season comes to an end with PFL title still up for grabs
» Back

The regular season’s final week arrives with three teams – Butler, Dayton and Drake – still in the hunt for a piece of the PFL championship and a berth in the fourth Gridiron Classic.

PFL Gridiron Classic Scenarios
BUTLER: Will participate in the Gridiron Classic with victory against Drake.
DAYTON: Will participate in the Gridiron Classic with victory against Marist AND Drake victory at Butler.
DRAKE: Will participate in the Gridiron Classic with victory at Butler AND Marist victory at Dayton.

PFL Championship Scenarios
BUTLER or DRAKE can win title outright with a victory and a Marist victory at Dayton.
A DAYTON victory against Marist will guarantee a co-championship with the winner of the Butler-Drake contest.

Week 11 Preview
Drake at Butler, 1 p.m.
Location: Indianapolis, Ind. (Butler Stadium)
Series: DRA leads, 12-5-1
Streak: BUT, one win
[Drake Game Notes | Butler Game Notes]

The final week’s most pivotal contest has Drake visiting Butler with both teams holding PFL championship aspirations. Butler saw its unbeaten run come to an end with a loss at Jacksonville last week, scoring a season-low seven points. A Butler win gives it a share of its second PFL title and first since 1994. Drake dropped its home finale to Dayton last week and was held to a season-low six points. A Drake win gives it a share of its fifth PFL crown and first since 2004.
What to watch: The big question for both teams is which offense will find its legs first. The weather should be optimal for both offenses with light winds, lots of sun and temperatures in the low 50s. Drake holds the edge in scoring offense, averaging 30.0 points per game in PFL play, courtesy the league's most efficient red-zone offense. Drake has scored on 26 of its 27 red-zone possessions with 21 touchdowns. Butler fell to fifth in scoring average (21.6 ppg in PFL action) but remained second in total offens, averaging 390.6 yards per game in PFL play. Butler is less efficient in the red-zone, converting on 19-of-27 possessions and scoring just 16 touchdowns.
Who to watch: Butler's offensive line has permitted a league-low seven sacks (1.0 pg) in PFL play this season. Behind that effort, sophomore quarterback Andrew Huck has run amok, averaging 223.7 total offensive yards in PFL play – including 180.1 passing yards per game. However, Drake's defense has racked up a league-leading 26 sacks (3.71 pg) in its PFL campaign. Three Drake defenders – senior defensive end Dain Taylor (3rd, 0.93 pg), senior linebacker Ben Morrison (t-5th, 0.64 pg) and senior defensive end Josh Walkup (t-5th, 0.64 pg) – are ranked among the PFL's top five in sacks per game.

Marist at Dayton. 1 p.m.
Location: Dayton, Ohio (Welcome Stadium)
Series: First Meeting
[Marist Game Notes | Dayton Game Notes]

Dayton put itself back into the championship picture with a win last week but will need a home victory to grab a share of its 10th PFL title and first since 2007. Marist, the league’s newest member, has won a school-record six straight and sits just behind the league-leading trio at 5-2. Dayton downed Drake on the road last week with an impressive defensive performance. Marist also won a road contest at Davidson, holding the Wildcats to two field goals.
What to watch: The league's top two defenses clash in this game with Dayton leading the PFL in scoring defense (12.9 ppg) and total defense (224.3 ypg) in league action. Marist has improved steadily as the season has progressed and is second in scoring defense (15.9 ppg) and total defense (241.0 ypg).
Who to watch: It's in the hands of two senior quarterbacks to solve the defensive riddle, Saturday. Marist senior quarterback Chris Debowski has averaged 180.1 yards per game through the air but is fresh off a career-best 153-yard rushing performance against Davidson. Dayton senior quarterback Steve Valentino is enjoying an impressive campaign, ranking second among passers in passing yardage (233.9 ypg) and first among quarterbacks in rushing yardage (73.7 ypg) in PFL action.

Morehead State at Valparaiso, 1 p.m.
Location: Valparaiso, Ind. (Brown Field)
Series: MOR leads, 11-3
Streak: MOR, two wins
[Morehead State Game Notes | Valparaiso Game Notes]

Morehead State travels to Valparaiso in a meeting between two programs seeking their season’s first PFL victory. Both teams were held to one score in losses last week. Morehead State scored a touchdown in its home loss to San Diego while Valparaiso was held to a field goal in a home loss to Campbell.
What to watch: Turnovers have been a big problem for both Morehead State and Valparaiso this season. The Eagles have averaged 3.29 turnovers per PFL contest this season while Valparaiso is close behind with 3.00 turnovers per contest. They have been more of a problem for the Morehead State defense which is ranked fourth in the league in total defense, surrendering just 301.9 yards per game, but is ranked eighth in scoring defense, allowing 25.9 points per game. Valparaiso's defense ranks 10th in the league in both scoring defense (33.3 ppg) and total defense (418.9 ypg).

Jacksonville at Campbell, 1 p.m.
Location: Buies Creek, N.C. (Barker-Lane Stadium)
Series: JAC leads, 1-0
Streak: JAC, one win
[Jacksonville Game Notes | Campbell Game Notes]

Campbell returns home to close out its season against Jacksonville. The Camels will look for a better result than last year’s 52-0 loss to the Dolphins in Jacksonville. Both programs enter the week with Week 11 victories. Jacksonville’s defense held league-leading Butler to seven points last week. Campbell surrendered just three points at Valparaiso, its first-ever PFL road win.
Who to watch: It may be a rusher's paradise in Buies Creek, Saturday, as the league's top rusher meets on of the league's top rushing duos. Jacksonville junior running back Rudell Small has nearly locked up the PFL rushing crown and has surpassed the 1,000-yard mark already this season. He needs just 70 yards to insure a 100-yard average for the season. Campbell boasts the duo of junior quarterback Daniel Polk (50.3 ypg) and sophomore running back Carl Smith (47.7 ypg), who combine to average nearly 100 yards per game.

Southern Utah at San Diego, 9 p.m.
Location: San Diego, Calif. (Torero Stadium)
Series: First Meeting
[San Diego Game Notes]

San Diego closes out its 2009 slate with a non-conference contest against Southern Utah which is coached by former USD assistant Ed Lamb. The Toreros are just 1-3 at Torero Stadium this season and will be playing its only non-conference home contest this season.
Who to watch: Sixth-year senior JT Rogan will be one of 15 Torero seniors to close out their career at Torero Stadium, Satuday. Rogan will close out an impressive career as the league's active leader in rushing yardage with 3,498 yards – a San Diego career record. His 38 career rushing touchdowns are the second-most in PFL history, four behind the mark set by Drake's Jason Grove (42, 1995-98).
