The second full week of PFL action this season puts all three of the league’s unbeatens on the road. Butler travels to Campbell for the second straight season, Drake completes a 5,586-mile, two-week road trip when it travels to Davidson
and Dayton heads north to Valparaiso. Meanwhile, Marist and Morehead State meet for the first time and Jacksonville literally goes coast-to-coast to meet San Diego.
Week 8 Previews
Butler at Campbell, Noon
Location: Buies Creek, N.C. (Barker-Lane Stadium)
Series: BUT leads, 1-0
Streak: BUT, one win
[Butler Game Notes | Campbell Game Notes]
Butler remained one of four overall unbeaten FCS squads with its win last week and will travel to North Carolina to face Campbell, whose lone win this season came at Barker-Lane Stadium. The Bulldogs are 6-0 for the first time since 1991 after they eked out a victory against Valparaiso in Week 7. Meanwhile, the Camels have lost five straight since its season-opening home victory, but showed promise against in a loss to Old Dominion last week.
Who to Watch: Butler sophomore defensive end Grant Hunter - a preseason All-America pick - has a PFL best 7.5 sacks this season and ranks second among all FCS players with 1.25 sacks per game. He is averaging just 5.0 tackles per game, but has posted 1.75 tackles for loss per game. Campbell brings the league's top rushing offense to the field with sophomore running back C.J. Oates ranked sixth (56.3 ypg), junior quarterback Daniel Polk ranked seventh (51.2 ypg) and sophomore running back Rashaun Brown (48.0 ypg) ranked eighth.
Drake at Davidson, 1 p.m.
Location: Davidson, N.C. (Richardson Stadium)
Series: DRA leads, 3-1
Streak: DRA, one win
[Drake Game Notes | Davidson Game Notes]
Drake, another of the three PFL unbeatens, makes its own trek to North Carolina to meet Davidson. The Bulldogs traveled to San Diego in Week 7 and came out with a victory and now head to the nation’s other coast to complete a two-week road trip of 5,586 miles. Davidson returns home after suffering a shutout loss at Dayton. The last two games in this series have been close, with a margin of three points each time – Davidson winning 24-21 at home in 2007 and Drake returning the favor with a 20-17 home win in 2008.
Who to Watch: Drake blocked a field-goal try late in the fourth quarter to secure a victory against Davidson last season. This year, the Bulldogs bring senior kicker Brandon Wubs, the league's top scorer (8.2 ppg), into this Week 8 contest. Wubs has made 11-of-13 field goals and 16-of-17 PATs this season. Davidson has just 13 kick attempts (5 field goals, 8 PATs) this season. The Wildcats may have their hands full as they bring the league's lowest scoring offense (10.2 ppg) into this affair. They have relied heavily on a ground attack led by junior running back Kenny Mantuo (60.2 ypg, 3 TD) and junior quarterback Michael Blanchard (44.2 ypg, 2 TD), who rank fourth and ninth, respectively, in rushing yardage this season.
Marist at Morehead State, 1 p.m.
Location: Morehead, Ky. (Jayne Stadium)
Series: First Meeting
[Marist Game Notes | Morehead State Game Notes]
Following an off week, Marist returns to PFL action when it travels to Morehead State. The Red Foxes won their last two contests, leveling its PFL record at .500, before reaching their off week. Morehead State returns home looking to stop its four-game losing streak. Eagles head coach Matt Ballard will coach Saturday’s affair in his bare feet in support of Samaritan’s Feet, a non-profit organization whose goal is to provide shoes to impoverished children around the world.
Who to Watch: Marist senior running back O'Neill Anderson (90.0 ypg) leads all PFL rushers, but has just two touchdown carries this season. In the red zone the ball goes to 6-0, 220-pound sophomore running back Ryan Dinnebeil who has four touchdown carries on 15 carries and 24 net yards this season. It's been a tough season offensively for Morehead State, but they can hand their hat on their defense which leads the FCS in tackles for loss (10.71 pg) and ranks third in rushing defense (65.4 ypg). The Eagles boast four players among the FCS' top-100 in tackles for loss: senior defensive end Andrew Doan (6th, 1.86), senior linebacker Wes McDermott (50th, 1.29), junior defensive back J.D. Cecil (72nd, 1.14) and senior defensive tackle Derick Steiner (94th, 1.07)
Dayton at Valparaiso, 2 p.m.
Location: Valparaiso, Ind. (Brown Field)
Series: DAY leads, 16-2
Streak: DAY, five wins
[Dayton Game Notes | Valparaiso Game Notes]
Dayton, one of the three PFL’s 3-0 squads, travels to Valparaiso. The Flyers have won five straight since senior Steve Valentino moved under center, including a shutout win of Davidson in Week 7. The Crusaders saw their upset bid
turned aside at Butler last week and face their second-straight unbeaten PFL squad while still seeking their first PFL victory.
Who to Watch: Dayton's defense is annually one of the PFL's best and this season has been more of the same as they lead the PFL and rank among the FCS top-10 in Total Defense (3rd in FCS), Scoring Defense (4th) and Pass Efficiency Defense (6th). Senior defensive back J.J. Vercammen ranks among the FCS top 100 in three defensive categories: tackles (11.83 pg, 6th), tackles for loss (1.58 pg, 16th) and sacks (0.50 pg, 75th). Sophomore defensive lineman Nikko Carson leads the Valparaiso defense – and is ranked among the PFL's top 10 individually – in sacks (0.83 pg, 5th) and tackles for loss (1.42 pg, 9th) but has only 24 tackles (4.0 pg) this season.
Jacksonville at San Diego, 4:30 p.m.
Location: San Diego, Calif. (Torero Stadium)
Series: SAN leads, 3-1
Streak: JAC, one win
[Jacksonville Game Notes | San Diego Game Notes]
Jacksonville is still looking to remain within sight of the league leaders and will travel to San Diego in a coast-to-coast excursion. The Dolphins suffered their only loss in Week 6 but rebounded with a shutout home win last week and are
one game behind the leaders. The Toreros stay home after suffering a late-game loss to unbeaten Drake in Torero Stadium last week.
Who to Watch: Jacksonville's defense leads the FCS in sacks per game (4.58 pg). Junior defensive end Shaun Lewis leads the unit after tying the school record with three sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss against Morehead State. He is tied for seventh nationally, averaging one sack per game. He may have a tougher time of it against San Diego's offensive line which has permitted just nine sacks in six games this season. That offensive line also helped the Torero running attack to average 134.2 yards per game and score seven touchdowns.
